The Second Floor: The Bullpen
The second floor is where I created the newsroom where Lois, Clark, Jimmy, and Cat Grant would ply their craft. I wanted to create a darkroom for Jimmy where I could hang decorative tiles that looked like film strips hanging while drying and a sink and safety light. I wanted to have desks for each of the reporters along with a copy machine, water cooler, and filing cabinet with papers piled on top.
Finally I knew I wanted to have “TV monitors” on the walls where I could place custom printed tiles with news feeds from Central City, Gotham, and Star City, giving the reports a way to stay informed about superheroes in other metropolitan areas.
The second floor is the first floor where a staircase moves in to accommodate the stair step design of the building. Another interesting element of the second floor is the use of arches to break the floor up to make it seem busier, and more lifelike.
As I was adding details to the floor, I had some fun creating a messy desk for Lois that included donuts, a hair brush on top of a pile of mail, and crumpled papers around the waste basket. Before we move up to the third floor, here are a few photos of the newsroom showing Lois and Clark’s desks and some of the other decorative elements:
